“How-to” Best Man Speech
If you are one of the unlucky ones who either has no experience of writing a best mans speech or you simply have trouble finding the right words, research is key. This will ensure that no embarrassment is caused to either yourself or to the wedding party as you present the speech that the guests have been waiting for all day. There are many places from which you can derive help or information, which the most available and impartial, being the internet.
Rely on others
Without having to depend on others entirely, try to ask people who have already been through the experience, for advice on how they dealt with the stress. No matter how cool, calm and collected you are in general life or within the workplace, you might find that performing a best man’s speech far outweighs the level of stress you have ever been under before. After all, you have to be witty, charming, funny, wise and yourself, all at the same time; no mean feat!
When it comes to requesting advice from an experienced public speaker, on how to remain calm and collected throughout your speech, the first point of advice that they will offer might seem obvious…take a swift drink before beginning. It will calm your nerves and chop them in half in front of your eyes, but be extremely careful not to go overboard. You don’t want to be slurring your words and have the audience squinting their eyes at you whilst you stumble into the table on which the wedding cake has been sat all day.
Prepare, prepare, prepare
Do you remember when you mother and teachers always told you that preparation was key when you were younger? Well this is finally something that they drummed into you that is true; preparation will see you writing a beautiful speech to suit the occasion. A great tip that I was once told was to carry a small notebook and pen around with you whilst you are out. The reason being for this is that people very often have a fantastic idea for a comical quote or meaningful line to add to their speech whilst they are out shopping…and then forget it by the time they arrive home.
Eventually, you will end up with a brainstorm of ideas which you can work to put together to become a full best man’s speech. You can use the internet for inspiration if your short list of “possibles” is not getting any longer. Plagiarism is not good, but there is nothing wrong with tweaking someone else’s line and making it your own. If you are able to write lines of your speech that are personal to the bride and groom then you will be onto an instant winner right away.
